Job Description:

Summary

The Missional Storyteller is responsible for reporting and writing stories and other content for Covenant Communications. This position works with ministry areas, conferences, pastors, and other constituents to share stories that inform, educate, connect, and inspire readers throughout the Covenant Church. The Missional Storyteller also works with the Marketing & Communications team to enhance and promote the work of the mission areas and the denominational team.

 

Essential Functions

  • Reports on stories and activities throughout the Covenant, including Covenant Events.
  • Develops and maintains healthy story production schedule to optimize engagement and relevancy.
  • In collaboration consultation with the editorial team, formulates story calendar and development plan to ensure pace and delivery of stories advances mission area objectives and Covenant cohesion.
  • Coordinates with conference offices to promote and share regional Covenant news and events in cooperation with the facilitators and conference superintendents. Coordinates with contracted writers to supplement content created by the Communications team.
  • Recruits and manages volunteer reporters/writers and assigns news topics, in consultation with the Editorial Director.
  • Researches and produces feature articles for the Companion in coordination with the editorial team.
    • Interacts with individuals at local churches, conference, and denominational levels, as well as other Covenant institutions, teams and offices to research and solicit editorial content.
    • Serves as a primary contributor to Strategic Marketing Content that engages key constituencies in the mission and ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
      • Verifies facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources.
      • Works with digital team to share content on Companion social media platforms.
      • Helps develop and execute multimedia enterprise projects.
      • Track and communicate story developments with constituents to foster and facilitate engagement.
      • Supervises interns as appropriate.
      • Helps lead occasional in-person community-outreach events.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Editorial Director, Executive Director of Marketing & Communication, and/or Chief Operating Officer.

Experience and Skills:

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Media, Journalism, English, Marketing or related field. A minimum engagement of three (3) years in the Evangelical Covenant Church and a minimum of 5 years of functioning in news media positions, to include experience in: English Language (structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar), Communication and Media (media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

 

Preferred: Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills exercised in multimedia productions, including web and social media interactions.

  • Mastery of Microsoft and Windows applications, computer and electronics (computer hardware and software relating to media, including applications and programming) and web technologies.
  • Detail oriented, strong organization, prioritization and time-management skills.
  • Excels in attention to detail with high level of accuracy in the preparation of documents and correspondence. Writes and edits stories/articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Works well under pressure and is able to accomplish multiple tasks, with conflicting priorities and timelines.

Environment Conditions

Must be able to work in office conditions with moderate noise levels. Willing to travel occasionally and with short notice. Must be versatile and able to work for prolonged segments sitting/standing and on a computer. Must engage frequently with office tools and equipment, such as: computer, copier, phone, web-conferencing equipment, cell communication, printers, etc. Must be able to occasionally lift or move items, less than 25lbs.
